In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, FoundCare recently welcomed representatives from Natera, Inc., a leader in genetic testing and diagnostics, to engage with our staff and patients on the importance of genetic testing for cancer risk. Natera conducted on-site screenings using their Empower test, a state-of-the-art tool that identifies genetic risk factors for hereditary cancers, including breast cancer, which affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S.
The Empower test employs next-generation sequencing technology to analyze up to 53 genes, providing a comprehensive assessment of risks for developing common hereditary cancers, such as breast, ovarian, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. This cutting-edge test helps patients take proactive steps to safeguard their health.
During the visit, Natera’s team educated our staff and patients on the importance of genetic awareness, especially within underserved communities where early cancer detection rates remain disproportionately low. Statistics reveal that Black and Hispanic women, for example, are less likely to receive early cancer diagnoses compared to non-Hispanic white women, often resulting in later-stage detection and reduced treatment options. This disparity underscores the need for increased access to genetic testing and preventive care for all.
Through this collaboration, FoundCare continues to strengthen its commitment to proactive, patient-centered care, empowering patients to stay ahead of health risks and addressing the healthcare gap for underserved populations.
