Staci: A mammogram is a type of X-ray that is used to screen for breast cancer. It is essential because it can detect breast cancer in its early stages when treatment is most effective. Early detection increases the chances of successful treatment and a better prognosis.

Staci: Women of average risk for breast cancer should have a baseline screening mammogram at age 40. Women at high risk should begin their screening at the age of 30 or an age recommended by their healthcare provider and continue for as long as they are in good health. It is always advised to work with your healthcare provider to determine what preventative cancer screening is best for you.

• Women ages 40 to 44 have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they wish to do so.
• Women aged 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
• Women 55 and older can switch to mammograms every 2 years, however I recommend continuing yearly screenings regardless if you are high risk or not. Early detection saves lives!

Staci: When we talk about the risk of getting breast cancer, it is not the same for all women. It really depends on your age, individual health and family history. The factors that can increase your risk include a family history of breast and ovarian cancer, especially if it is a close relative like a mother, sister, or daughter, or a diagnosis that happens before the age of 45. Genetics also play a key role, meaning the cancer could be hereditary, as well as the density of your breast tissue. This is why it is important to meet regularly with a provider so that you can discuss and determine what preventative cancer screening is best for you based on your level of risk.

Staci: Yes! The best thing you can do for yourself is lead a healthy lifestyle. While we can’t alter all of the risk factors, making healthy lifestyle choices is the key to decreasing your chances of developing a chronic disease, cancer, or other illness.

• Avoid tobacco products- make the choice to quit now!
• Manage a healthy weight- women with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) are at higher risk of developing cancer.
• Limit your alcohol consumption.
• Eat a healthy diet by reducing sugar, carbohydrates, red meats, and processed foods.
• Meet regularly with your healthcare provider and get screened!

Staci: In order to make the process smoother, I always suggest the following:

• Schedule your mammogram during the second week of your menstrual cycle. Breasts are less tender during this time, which can make the experience more comfortable.

• DO NOT apply any deodorants, lotions, or powders on the day of your appointment. These products can interfere with the mammography images.

• Wear a two-piece outfit. You will need to undress from the waist up for the exam, and a two-piece outfit makes it more convenient.

• Bring any previous mammogram images if you have had them at a different facility. This helps your radiologist make accurate comparisons.

• If you are anxious about pain or discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen before your appointment, as long as it is okay with your healthcare provider.

Staci: During the mammogram, the technologist will position your breast on the imaging machine. To get a clear image, the breast will be compressed between two plates for a few seconds. The compression might be uncomfortable, but it is necessary for better image quality. The process is relatively quick, usually taking less than 20 minutes for both breasts.

Staci: Absolutely. First, you should always communicate with your technologist. Let them know if you are experiencing excessive discomfort. They can make adjustments to minimize it. It can also help to take a deep breath and try to relax as much as possible to help ease any discomfort during compression. It is important to remember that the discomfort is temporary and plays a crucial role in obtaining accurate images for early detection.

Staci: After the mammogram, the images will be reviewed by a radiologist. If they notice anything that needs further evaluation, they may recommend additional tests, like an ultrasound or a biopsy. If everything looks normal, you will receive your results within a few days, and you will be advised on when to schedule your next mammogram.

Staci: Ask questions. If you have any concerns about your results, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider or the technologist. They can provide more information and guidance on the next steps, if necessary.
