Man Up to Wellness: Your Guide to Essential Health Screenings

Did YOU Know?

  • The average life expectancy for men is about 75 years, yet every year, thousands pass away prematurely. Heart disease ranks as the leading cause of death among men, followed closely by cancer, unintentional injuries, and strokes, according to data from the CDC.
  • According to the CDC, drinking alcohol raises the risk of cancers in the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and colon—which are more prevalent among men. It also boosts the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Walking for just 30 minutes a day can help reduce your risk for many health problems including diabetes and cancer.
  • The suicide rate among men is almost 4x higher than women, according to the CDC.
  • Men who get 7-8 hours of sleep each night lower their risk of heart disease, heart attacks, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, strokes, and diabetes.

During Men's Health Month, FoundCare is dedicated to raising awareness about the specific health challenges men face and encouraging proactive steps to protect their well-being. A key part of this effort is emphasizing the importance of routine screenings. These screenings play a crucial role in catching health issues early, allowing for timely interventions that can make a significant difference. Regular check-ups not only help identify potential health risks but also empower men to make informed decisions about their health, enabling them to take control of their overall wellness.

We've compiled a list of crucial screenings essential for promoting optimal health and longevity, along with recommended frequencies for adult men:

BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS

Why It’s Important: High blood pressure, often referred to as the "silent killer," can silently pave the way for heart disease, stroke, and other severe conditions, without showing any symptoms. Regular screenings are essential to catch and manage elevated blood pressure early, significantly reducing the risks associated with these serious health issues.

Frequency:

  • Starting at age 18, every 2 years if your blood pressure is normal (less than 120/80 mm Hg).
  • Annually if your blood pressure is elevated or you have risk factors for hypertension.

CHOLESTEROL CHECK

Why It’s Important: High cholesterol levels increase the risk of heart disease and stroke by contributing to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. This buildup can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries, which reduces blood flow to the heart and brain, increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes. Regular cholesterol screenings are crucial for early detection and intervention to lower cholesterol levels and reduce these risks.

Frequency:

  • Every 4-6 years starting at age 20.
  • More often if you have risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease.

DIABETES SCREENING

Why It’s Important: Detecting prediabetes and diabetes early is crucial because it can prevent serious complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve issues. Regular screenings help monitor blood sugar levels, allowing for timely intervention and lifestyle adjustments to effectively manage diabetes and reduce the risk of long-term health problems.

Frequency:

  • Every 3 years starting at age 45.
  • Earlier and more frequently if you have risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure, or a family history of diabetes.

PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING

Why It’s Important: Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among men. Early detection through screenings such as PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests and digital rectal exams can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Detecting prostate cancer early increases the likelihood of successful treatment and can potentially save lives by allowing for prompt medical intervention and appropriate management strategies. Further emphasizing why regular screenings are essential for men, especially those at higher risk due to age or family history, to detect and address prostate cancer early.

Frequency:

  • Discuss with your FoundCare provider starting at age 50.
  • Earlier if you have risk factors such as African American descent or a family history of prostate cancer.

COLON CANCER SCREENING

Why It’s Important: Screening for colon cancer is crucial because it can prevent the disease altogether or catch it early when treatment is most effective. Tests like colonoscopies can find and remove precancerous growths before they become cancerous or detect cancer in its early stages when it is easier to treat.

Frequency:

  • Start regular screenings at age 45.
  • Earlier if you have a family history or other risk factors.

TESTICULAR CANCER SCREENING

Why It’s Important: Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among younger men aged 15-35 and is highly treatable, especially with early detection through medical screenings. Regular check-ups ensure prompt diagnosis and effective treatment for those affected.

Frequency:

  • Monthly self-exams starting in adolescence.
  • Clinical exams during regular physicals.

MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING

Why It’s Important: Mental health is as vital as physical health. Conditions such as depression and anxiety can deeply affect your quality of life, impacting relationships, work performance, and daily activities. Taking proactive steps to address mental health concerns, such as seeking support from healthcare professionals or counselors, is essential for maintaining your overall well-being and a balanced lifestyle. Recognizing and addressing mental health needs can lead to increased resilience and better management of life's challenges.

Frequency:

  • Discuss any mental health concerns with your FoundCare provider at every visit.
  • More frequent screening if you have symptoms or a family history of mental health issues.
