“I was beginning to think you all weren’t coming!” Ms. Yolette Bonnet jokingly said into the microphone to the crowd of parents and children who had braved the morning rain to arrive more than an hour early, for FoundCare, Inc.’s Back-to-School Health Fair—just in time to hear see a special performance by Palm Beach Lakes High School’s marching band. It was 9:30AM, it was raining, and it was already hot; but, there was Bonnet, huddling with a group of elected officials and community leaders under a small white tent, each of them waiting for their turn to personally welcome the crowd, which by that time numbered well over 400 people (by the end of the day, that number would grow to over 700 participants).

Mayor Bev Smith (Village of Palm Springs) Councilman Gary M. Ready (Council Member of the Village of Palm Springs – District 3) Commissioner Gregg K. Weiss (Palm Beach County Commissioner – District 2), Senator Lori Berman (State Senator – District 31), and Senator Bobby Powell (State Senator – District 30) each spoke about why they support FoundCare’s mission and why they believe in initiatives like the Back-to-School Health Fair. Once the greetings and official introductions had ended, FoundCare staff began to orient parents and children towards where they needed to be: to the activities table, to visit the vendors, to grab a refreshment, to the restroom, to the examination rooms, to the backpack distribution table, to the south end of the property for pictures with members of The Village of Palm Springs Police Department and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. All this created a traffic of families which seemed to flow as if the day had been rehearsed, and all of it happened with family-friendly background music being played by DJ “Jay” Marriott, who was one of several volunteers to give their time at the event.

FoundCare’s 2019 Back-to-School Health Fair ended at around 3:00PM, and, just as they came in, hundreds of families filed out with smiles on their faces—only this time, each child was better prepared for a healthy and great school year ahead.
