Psychiatrist (Part-Time)

FoundCare's mission is to fulfill unmet healthcare and social service needs of individuals and families in Palm Beach County. In order to accomplish this mission, FoundCare operates a Federally Qualified Health Center that offers pediatric and adult primary care, chronic disease management, infusions, behavioral health counseling, laboratory work, X-rays and dentistry, as well as an on-site pharmacy.

Position Summary

The Psychiatrist is responsible for providing direct clinical services to patients at FoundCare. The Psychiatrist will be a part of the behavioral health team, as well as a consultant member of the Primary care team, and will participate in developing Patient Care Plans.

Essential Job Functions

  • Build rapport with patients, using courteous and culturally sensitive approach to obtains complete and accurate information to assess and diagnose a diverse group of patients with mental health disorder(s) according to the DSM.5
  • Set warm and welcoming environment with patients by listening to their concerns and addressing those that can be addressed and informing patients of the course of action to follow for other health concerns.
  • Communicate effectively, provide clear and concise verbal and written instructions to ensure that instructions are understood. Adjust the communication style to fit patient’s level of understanding. Listen and request feedback from staff and patients to improve quality.
  • Provide psycho-pharmaceutical treatment to patients who present with mental illness and/or mild substance use disorder.
  • Coordinate treatment with the behavioral team, by promoting counseling for patients who are currently treated with psychotropic medications.
  • Comply with state regulations in regards to verifying Eforce prior to prescribing and educate patients about danger/benefits of controlled substances.
  • Collaborate with Primary Care Providers (PCP) in the treatment of existing patients at FoundCare.
  • Participate in monthly department meetings and monthly staff meetings.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and the development of Patient Care Plans.
  • Ensure adequate staffing, appropriate training, exceptional customer service, and quality clinical services within the department.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to graduate students as needed.
  • Assign, direct, and review the work of psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (APRN), as assigned.
  • Propose training and development of staff to improve performance.
  • Support, communicate and facilitate agency wide programs.
  • Utilize electronic medical records use by all clinical staff to ensure that notes are legible in order to provide adequate information for other health care providers.
  • Ensure that departments are kept up to date on changes that are occurring in psychiatry.
  • Advise patients and family members in methods that facilitate a capacity for self-care and a move toward a healthcare partnership between providers, customers and their families.
  • Use the computer system in order to obtain customer information, order labs and tests, and check messages.
  • Consult and coordinate with health care providers working in other departments and in other locations. Provide assistance to the health care providers by answering questions regarding customer care.
  • Intervene and diffuses situations involving agitated, confused or emotional patients and/or family members.
  • Start on time and works with other team members to ensure a timely flow of customers.
  • Abide by policies, procedures and bylaws. Participate in fulfilling the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Requires a Medical degree with a specialty in psychiatry from an accredited University.
  • Completed residence in child/adult psychiatry and open to work with diverse populations.
  • Three to Five years of clinical practice and experience.
  • One (1) year of experience preferably in a Community Health setting.
  • Meets all requirements in order to obtain medical staff membership and required privileges to include Medicaid and Medicare credentialing.
  • Keep up to date with market trends and new developments utilizing information for business improvement.
  • Ability to make strategic decisions. Ability to discuss strategic and sensitive issues.
  • Inspire others to share their vision and support them to reach a common goal.
  • Ability to work across all levels influencing client and organization culture.
  • Analytical expertise in understanding complex issues and their consequences.
  • Possess superior organizational, interpersonal, written/verbal communication skills.
  • Effective communication and motivational techniques for one-on-one and in public presentation to diverse audiences.
  • Flexible schedule, allowing for weekends or evenings and travel as needed.
  • PC proficient.
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, with or without the use of an interpreter. Ability to communicate effectively in writing using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
  • Ability to speak another language, such as Creole, Spanish is an asset.
  • Clear understanding that FoundCare and related agencies provide information on educating individuals about safer sex practices which could include but not be limited to: exposure to explicit language, explicit printed material, and descriptions of explicit sexual activities, as part of the agency’s mission in the prevention and transmission of HIV disease.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to endure short, intermittent, and/or long periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
  • Transport him/herself to other departments, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-site locations to accomplish job responsibilities, attend meetings, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • Accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, e.g. pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboard, telephone, etc.
